Frequently Asked Questions

Gutter Maintenance Frequency

How often you clean your gutters depends on your roof type and the surrounding foliage. If your home is near one or two large trees, an annual cleaning should be enough. But if you’re surrounded by thick vegetation, you might want to clean them twice a year. Also, roofs with sand-based tiles tend to degrade over time, leading to a buildup of sand that can promote unwanted growth.

Diagnosing Leaks

Leaks usually result from installation issues or physical damage. Gutters need to be correctly angled toward the downpipe; if they’re off, water might pool or run off the edge, eventually causing leaks. Impacts from ladders, vehicles, or other objects can also damage them. Additionally, blockages in the downpipe—often around the upper bend or where it connects to the drain—can force water back into the gutter. In coastal areas, extra factors like wind-blown sand, seeds, and bird droppings can speed up debris buildup.

Gutter Lifespan

For UPVC gutters, you’re looking at a lifespan of 25–35 years. Over time, the rubber seals can become porous and the plastic might crack under heavy water flow, leading to leaks. Temporary fixes like mastic and sealants often only last a year or two.

When to Clean Your Gutters

Winter often shows leaks more clearly since watermarks and gaps become visible when it rains, making it a good time to check for issues. For commercial properties, it’s important to clear out debris during dry periods when the buildup is lighter and easier to manage. Regular annual cleaning, done at the same time each year, can help prevent major problems like water damage to brickwork, gardens, foundations, and more.

This approach helps ensure your gutters stay functional and protect your property effectively.
